Birth Story of Baby Beckett

This may be TMI (Too Much Information) so Please Read with Warning!

Everything started the night of April 3rd. I woke up in the middle of the night with my back hurting, having my back go out with my last pregnancy, I figured it was that. It hurt really bad that I couldn't sleep and was having a hard time finding a position to get comfortable (standing, sitting, laying, etc.) On Easter Sunday, my back settled down a bit but I was still not feeling very well so I laid around the house most of the day. Hoping I would feel better on Monday, again, I just couldn't seem to feel much better in my back. The whole time I thought it was because my back went out or was on its way...

Tuesday morning (April 6) I woke up like usual to get the kids ready for school. I started to do the girls hair and realized I was bleeding. I have never bleed during a pregnancy but knew that it couldn't be good. I calmly called the doctor, knowing that they would want to check me out but thinking it would be nothing and I would feel completely dumb for going in :) Jed dropped me off at the doctors and took the rest of the kids to school. The doctor checked me out and couldn't find anything unusual but they wanted to monitor the baby for 30 minutes and do an ultrasound "just to make sure." I was more excited to see the baby again then worried about anything being wrong. I have had such "normal" and healthy pregnancies up until then, minus Braia but I have always felt that was such a fluke thing.

After monitoring me for 30 minutes, they sent me in for the ultrasound. The ultrasound tech wouldn't tell me anything but she wasn't acting like anything was wrong. As soon as she was done, she told us to go wait in the waiting room and the doctor would call us back and go over the results. As we were walking to the waiting room, the nurse tracks us down and says that the baby's heart rate wasn't looking that good so they wanted to monitor me for another 10 minutes or so. After that, they said that the baby's heart rate still didn't look to great and they wanted to monitor me longer at the hospital, so they sent us over to be admitted to Labor and Delivery.

The doctor came and checked on me around lunch time and said that the ultrasound looked good but that the baby's was showing signs of distress. She then did a Biophysical profile, which is a more in-depth ultrasound. Again, everything came back on that okay, I was just a little low on fluid. They still wanted me to stay and be monitored longer.

Around 3pm in the afternoon, a different doctor came in and dropped some bad news. She said that I should have my husband come down and I was most likely going to be delivered in a couple hours. The baby wasn't doing well and they couldn't find what exactly was wrong. They increased my IV fluids and said they would check on me again in an hour. I was starting to freak out, knowing that he was breech for the past few months, I knew he hadn't turned. I could feel his head in the upper right side of my tummy. They mentioned that they wouldn't even try a Version (a method of manually turning the baby) because he was already in distress and they figured he wouldn't handle it very well, or a vaginal birth. My biggest fear was coming to reality...a c-section, my heart just dropped. Of course I would want anything to save my baby’s life but just disappointed in my body for basically "failing" …again.

Jed called into work, my family took care of my kids and we prepared for the birth of our son. After an hour longer of monitoring he started to do much better. They figured that the extra fluids were helping, bed rest and the fact that I hadn't had any other bleeding since that morning that things were going okay. So they decided to watch me through the night and do another Biophysical Profile in the morning and go from there. The doctor then stress how concerned they were that afternoon, mentioning that all the doctors were gathered together trying to figure out not IF they should deliver but WHEN.

The next morning they had me wheel-chaired (annoying) to their office for the ultrasound. The doctor came to my room at 2pm that afternoon and dropped the bomb. An 8cm tear in my placenta showed up during the night...they were going to deliver that evening. Because I had already eaten lunch, they had to wait until 9pm at night, unless things started to get worse. They put me on strict bed rest, worried that I could start bleeding at any minute. All I could think about was having another preemie...another baby left in the hospital...another baby struggling...not fair...and not only going to have to deal with leaving my baby in the care of other but having...a c-section to recover from.

Well, things did end up taking a worse turn and they rushed me back at 6:45pm to the operating room. Jed and my mom got to go with me. I was so nervous, couldn't stop shaking, crying and worrying. As soon as they got me numb, they started...it all went so fast.

Beckett was delivered at 7:09pm...it took him awhile to cry. They realized that once they got me open that my uterus was full of blood, he had swallowed a lot. They were happy they delivered so fast because it was a ticking bomb...I would have bleed out or he could have drown. My poor boy...

After being in the recovery room with my mom and dad (Jed went with Beckett) for an hour or so...laughing, talking, they finally wheeled me down to see him. He was beautiful...small and just perfect. I couldn't hold him and could basically only touch his foot. He was safe now and so the healing can being...he was much safer outside then he was inside.

Recovery was horrible. I had the meanest nurse wake me up at 4am (not even 12 hours after surgery) and make me sit up. I have no idea how to explain the pain but it burned, strung, ached...I begged and cried to the nurse to leave me alone and that I wasn't ready but she "made" me. That was the worst part. Once I got sitting up and then standing up...things went pretty smoothly from there. I walked REALLY slowly and I couldn't talk loud or yell. Jed joked that having a c-section is the only thing to make me quiet :)

10 days later and I am doing great, he is doing much better. I had hoped he wouldn’t stay in the hospital very long but I guess he is having a harder time because of the circumstances of his birth. He was put on CPAP right after delivery but within a few hours he was on just oxygen. He got off oxygen around 2 days old; I was so excited because Braia needed for the first 2 months of her life. On day 4 he was put back on oxygen because he was having a little reflex during feeding and is still on it currently. He weighed 4lbs 7oz at 1 week old (exactly his birth weight). We are taking things day by day, every day I can see him doing more and more...just counting down days still we can have him home. After SO many tears and fears things are settling down and doing great! Thanks to everyone that has helped out our family…brought meals…said prayers…we are so grateful for our family and friends!

I am so in love with my little man, he is just the sweetest baby.  He is doing very well in the NICU - Off oxygen and almost up to eating all his feeds, which mean soon there will be no more IV.
I am feeling better, definitely a harder recovery.  Today is the first day that I can actually walk a little more normal and can move around - it's laying down that's tricky!!

He's Here!

Beckett was born April 7, 2010
4lbs. 7oz.
17 1/2 inches
Brown hair, brown eyes
He was born 5 weeks early by c-section because my placenta abrupted.  He is doing amazingly well, although we are comparing him to Braia at 31 weeks.  He did need CPAP the first few hours and then went on oxygen but was taken off oxygen this evening, hoping that he wont need it again :)
He is such a great baby so far, doesn't cry at all, at least for now!  All of his silbings got to meet and they are dying to hold him.  Hoping he comes home really soon.
As for me, the c-section is definitely harder to deal with than a normal birth.  I have been in lots of pain but am finally feeling things getting under control.  I wish I would have been able to enjoy this pregnany, being my last, but of course things never really go as planned.  I will post more pictures and the birth story another time.
Thanks for all the prayers, well wishes and congrats.  We are so in love with our beauitful baby boy!!
